Teeth: Can You Remineralize Them?

Is there a way to remineralize teeth naturally?remineralize teeth naturally

Could your teeth be self-healing, like the rest of your body, if they had the right materials available?

When I was a little girl, one of my grandpas took great delight in grossing me out by popping his dentures out partway. Although Grandma had dentures too, she never ‘showed them off’. In my earliest memories of these grandparents they were probably in their late 50s. Both of my other grandparents died with their natural teeth still fully intact, both in their late 80s.

Most of our children had no or very few cavities while they lived at home. The main exception was our youngest daughter, who had eight cavities in one visit to the dentist when she was six. They were all limited to the surface, so the dentist didn’t even numb my daughter’s mouth to fill them.

Why do some people seem prone to poor teeth?

This all made me wonder – what is the difference? Why do some people seem prone to poor teeth, and others have strong teeth? More importantly, is there a way to improve the strength of teeth or to stimulate decay reversal?

Eliminating sugar in all forms is a good first step. We know that sugar causes many problems in our bodies, and that includes our mouths. Specifically, sugar feeds the bacteria in our mouths. These bacteria produce acid which eats away at teeth. These bacteria also produce plaque. When plaque is deposited along the gum line it can cause serious inflammation called gingivitis. We’ll deal with gum health in another article. Proper cleaning of the teeth and gums is also important, although not the focus of this article. Instead, we are going to focus on how to remineralize teeth.

Is there a way to improve the strength of teeth?

In order to repair teeth, one needs to have enough minerals and fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) in the diet, and these nutrients need to be bioavailable.1 (The cited website also goes into a lot of detail about the presence of phytic acid and how it inhibits nutrient absorption and contributes to tooth decay. I encourage you to read the article.)

Increase minerals in the diet

Let’s start with how to increase minerals in the diet. Bone broth is an excellent way to do this. Here’s the easy way to make it. Cover organic bones (beef, chicken, fish, oxtail) with purified water, bring to a boil, and turn the heat down to a simmer for up to 48 hours. (This can also be done in a crock pot.) The longer the simmer, the more minerals and collagen are extracted. I use organic chicken backs – typically three backs to two gallons of water. I add an onion, a carrot or two, a couple of sticks of celery, and a few bay leaves. When the simmering is done, strain out the bones, vegetables, and bay leaves. You may drink a cupful of bone broth each day, or use it as a base for soup, sauces, gravy, and to cook rice, pasta, or quinoa in.

Maintaining a diet high in calcium-rich foods is very important. Any vegetable that is rich in calcium will have the other nutrients needed to assimilate the calcium.  Some of the superstar calcium vegetables are kale, collard greens, turnip greens, and arugula (rocket).2  Other foods that are high in readily assimilable calcium and other minerals include nuts and seeds. (However, read the article on phytic acid, referenced above, before chowing down on a plateful of these.)

Apparently, organic eggshells contain 27 essential nutrients. Use the eggs as you normally would but save the shells. When all the shells are empty, rinse them, then fill a stock pot with filtered water, add the shells, and boil them for 10 minutes to kill any pathogens. (Alternately, you can use the shells peeled from boiled eggs.) Dry the shells: Mama Natural suggests placing the boiled shells on a stainless steel cookie sheet to dry overnight, or you can set them on paper towels or dry them in a dehydrator. When they are dry you can grind them with a coffee grinder or high-power blender to create a fine powder. Mama Natural suggests consuming ¼ tsp three times per day.3

Additionally, consuming excellent mineral supplements is a great idea. Skeletal Strength, Combination Three, Herbal Trace Minerals, CA ATC, Herbal Calcium, and Vitamin D are all helpful in protecting and repairing teeth and potentially helpful in helping with decay reversal.

Apply calcium topically

What else can you do? There is some anecdotal evidence that applying calcium topically may help. There are recipes for using organic eggshells or calcium-magnesium tablets to make tooth remineralizing powder with which to clean your teeth. Wellness Mama provides this recipe:4

4 Tbsp bentonite clay powder
3 Tbsp calcium powder (can use eggshell powder or pulverized Cal-Mag tablets*)
1 Tbsp baking soda
2 Tbsp powdered mint leaf, finely ground (or essential oil)
1 Tbsp cinnamon powder
1 Tsp cloves powder
1 Tbsp Xylitol powder (or more to taste)
Essential oils for flavoring as desired – peppermint, spearmint, cinnamon

*I used crushed Cal-Mag tablets that were past their ‘best before’ date. Calcium and magnesium are minerals that are very stable, unlike iron, so I’m pretty sure I’m safe using them. Crushing them in my vitamix created a lot of dust. Next time I’ll crush them and let the lidded jug sit for 30 minutes to let the dust settle before removing the lid. The recipe I used5 added some coconut oil to the mix. I also added essential oils as mentioned in the recipe above.

I’ve often said, “I’m going to fight getting old, tooth and nail!” (pun intended.) I will admit that since I‘ve only been doing the things in this article for a week or so, the jury is still out as to whether it’s helping to repair some existing problems. I will say my teeth feel much cleaner for using the blend I made – cleaner even than when I use an all natural toothpaste. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
